Ummm well, I'm Egyptian but I'd probably say somewhere in Cairo...maybe 6 October or something for a job, thats a pretty nice area...look it up....If you're looking for a "dream place" I'd say go to Alexandria (BEAUTIFUL beaches there)......Sharm al sheikh and Hurgada are very nice w/ beaches but they're more tourist type...kinda expensive to live in...Ur best bet for a job would most LIKELY be in cairo, but if u want somewhere REALLY nice to live it'd probably be outside of Cairo (like i said, Alexandria, Sharm, etc). If you don't find a job as an Archeologist you have a lot of other options open to you since im guessing ur American?? Foreigners who speak English usually make alot of money in Egypt...but yah...

u asked where all the action is for discovery ? Giza - part of the greater cairo , where the great pyramids where a lot of new important discoveries and the destination of a lot of expeditions looking for new discoveries , u can live in Haram ( pyramid) street or around

If interested in monuments specially Pharaonic, you would better live between Luxor and Aswan where about 1/3 of the monuments of the world found. It's expected to discover small villages or towns underground. If interested in other things, you better go to one of the Oasis or Siwa specially. I don't recommend Cairo or Giza or even close to them.

We usually live at a location nearest the site we are assigned to. For me specialising in NK 18-20th dynasty Luxor is ideal and I am lucky enough live less than a kilometre from the tomb we are currently preparing for restoration. Last year I was assigned to the Karnak temple complex and it was so nice to go to and from work each day via a motorboat on the Nile. It was a much shorter distance than driving all the way around to the bridge and then having to plow my way through Luxor city traffic. Luxor has 75% of Egypt's antiquities, tombs and monuments. It is also the home of "Oriental House" an institution allied to Chicago Uni and the home of the founding fathers of international Egyptology/archaeology There are a number of worldwide Egyptology/archaeology clubs and organizations that you could join. If you apply with a letter of recommendation from your university then you may also be eligible to become an associate member the SCA. All excavations, restorations of antiquities etc must be approved and recognized by the SCA, as are the staff employed even if it's funded internationally.
